Commissioners are set to vote on a public safety project during the October 17 regular meeting. The purpose of this project is to install bollards at the bandstand and boardwalk access, making the city safer; phase 1 of this project will include the Rehoboth Avenue boardwalk access and bandstand. Due to the large number of crowds during the Bandstand Summer Concert Series and other public events, the installation of bollards and swing arms will secure the bandstand and boardwalk areas to prevent vehicles - intentionally or unintentionally - from driving into pedestrians and onto sidewalks or the boardwalk. Find more details about this project in the presentation and FAQs on the side panel.

For a city as deeply in debt as this one to wast more than a million dollars to solve a problem that has not even been coherently described is nothing short of ridiculous. Less than a dozen bollards could easily secure the area from a vehicle entering the bandstand area. The bathrooms don’t require protection. Two of the 50 city owned vehicles could close the road during concerts and events. This council should be spending its time doing more with less.

Starting down the road of installing bollards never ends. The safe area will have to constantly be expanded. Every entry to the boardwalk will have to be outfitted. Are we safe on Rehoboth Avenue but not on Wilmington? This is especially ridiculous in a town that allows people to park on Rehoboth Avenue during the Sea Witch Parade. If you are worrying about a vehicle attack (you don't say that but what else would bollards be for) then first, you should discontinue that policy. Is the person with "knowledge of security" in the business of selling these bollards? If "There is no direct cause for concern," then it is an ugly waste.

One person with “knowledge of security” decided we needed to add a fortress to the beautiful Rehoboth bandstand area? Swing arm gates = hideous. Are metal detectors for concert-goers next? No boardwalk after dark? Shame on all of you for giving into fear.

Please elaborate on the lift bars being near the boardwalk. Emergency vehicles would not be coming from the boardwalk. Also, what is the reason for the excessive amount of barriers? 35 is excessive. The beautiful aesthetics of Rehoboth Beach is deteriorating with an obsessive amount of “protection”. It’s too much.
